Here are three versions of the same song. The first one is the original by Joy Division, the second is a cover by Nouvelle Vague and the third is The Cure (with Lyrics).

I like the Nouvelle Vague version best but someone on YouTube had this to say:

"I really don't like it. The meaning of the song is not respected at all ; trying to turn a deep and heart-taking song into a futile and light pop song is obviously doing another - and much less talented- song. Moreover, her voice is quite commonplace, she got a coy way to play with her hand... This sounds ludicrous"

I put together all of the clips I could find of the Grateful Dead jam at Woodstock in 1969. They did a five song set consisting of St. Stephen, Mama Tried, Darkstar / Hightime, and Turn on your Lovelight. They played in the pouring rain and had electrical problems which cut their set short but it is a classic collection nonetheless. I threw in two extras, one at the beginning and one at the end, which show some highlights. I can't find any footage of darkstar but if you have some, let me know. I had some trouble with my downstairs neighbor complaining about my music. The deal I made with the building owner is that I get to play in a room off the carport. Its my own personal jam space. The only trouble is that it is filled with black widow spiders. Everytime I think I have them cleared up, I find more hanging in my face. It always brings me back to this song. Once upon a time I was a huge Grateful Dead fan. Not really a Deadhead, I didn’t follow them. I would however, see them anytime they played anywhere near. Growing up in Western NY, I saw the show below. Every time I pick up my guitar, this is one of the first songs I play. I play my own version, nothing like the Dead, but it is still one of my favorites. You have to like jam bands in order to enjoy the music.

Following along the same line as the previous post, Damien Rice had his song “9 Crimes” featured on the Grey’s Anatomy episode “From a Whisper to a Scream.” It also found its way into the movie “Shrek the Third.”

The following song, Unplayed Piano, was recorded as a charity song to support the Freedom Campaign whose goal is to win the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and bring democracy to the oppressed people of Burma.

Here is a video of the same song with footage from Burma. It gives you a little perspective of what is going on. Don’t watch it if you think you live in a perfect world of rainbows and butterflies. It might change your view.

A friend of mine said that the only place to find new music is on iPod commercials or episodes of Grey’s anatomy. Radio will only play songs that become popular elsewhere. It is no longer a medium to bring new music to the masses.

50 Cent Haircut

I first saw 50 Cent Haircut at the Sherman Oaks Lounge (now called Coda) on Van Nuys Blvd. They did a rocking Honky Tonk version of Pink Floyd’s Breath ( no joke, it was great). Really a fantastic band. They play all the time in the LA area and I put them on my must see list. Jay and the gentleman of 50 Cent Haircut know how to lay it down. I have seen many shows at the Farmer’s Market at the Grove including an awesome jam on New Years Day. I felt really bad for them when they had their guitars stolen from a car in West Hollywood. As a harmonica player myself, I have to admire the band for that talent alone.

I can’t find Breath, but here is a Honky Tonk Who cover of “Don’t get fooled again” just to give you a taste of what the band is about.

I met Angel at Ireland’s 32. I think I can write a book on the many adventures that began at Ireland’s 32. Sometimes I play the Monday night open mic. A mix of world-class comedy and music. I like to play early before it gets to crowded. One time after I played, Angel Travis came in, set up her keyboard, and blew the house away. There was no way a comedian was going to get control of that crowd after she played. I was glad I went early. That would be a tough act to follow. As an extremely attractive woman, she always had droves of men surrounding her and buying her drinks. She would often hand a Guinness in my direction because they would come much faster than she could drink them. She is truly a great friend. Her words have helped me break through some mental barriers that I was having great difficulty dealing with. She is an absolutely wonderful person. Her music is powerful. She really opens herself up and lets you see what she is all about. I am not ashamed to say that her music has moved me to tears on more than one occasion. I try to bring as many people as I can to see her shows. Always a moving experience. Each and every time, I encourage you to see her in a live performance.

One of my favorite LA area bands is Saucy Monky. I first stumbled upon them at Ireland’s 32, a fantastic Irish pub located in the San Fernando Valley. The lead girls offered me a free CD if I dropped my pants during the middle of their set. The bartender said I would be banned for life if I did. I really like to go to Ireland’s 32 so I ended up buying a CD instead. This first video comes from their Celebrity Trash album which was released in 2003. A couple of the songs from this album got a lot of radio play in Ireland.

They released a cover of Divinyls “I touch myself” as a single and on their Tubulence album. The song was featured on the television show “Veronica Mars”.

They used to always play Thursday nights at O’Briens Pub on Main Street in Santa Monica but they say that the September 13th show was their last one there. They have a show lined up at Hotel Café at the end of September. I guess the best way to find out where they are playing next is to check out their myspace page.

The first song that I learned when I joined the band “Wild Child” in Plattsburg NY, back in 1992, was Steve Miller’s Jet Airplane. Nobody else wanted to sing so I stepped up and became the singer. I had a hard time learning the song and have never been known as much of a singer, but I never let that stop me.

This first song is a solo jam by Steve of his classic tune The Joker. It is really one of my favorites.

I have not seen Eric Clapton play a live show. I hope that someday I get the chance. Eric is an amazing guitarist, I have studied his music for years. He was listed in the top ten of Rolling Stone magazine’s greatest guitarists of all time. I don’t care if you are talking about the Yardbirds, Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers (I did see John play) or any of his decades of solo music and collaborations, Eric is one of the best. He knows his blues.

Hymn For My Soul is the new release from Joe Cocker that came out in 2007. I may just have to check it out. Joe became famous for his cover of The Beatles “With a little help from my friends” which featured Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page on guitar. This song became the opening track to the hit TV show “The Wonder Years. Here is Joe performing this song at Woodstock:

John Roy Anderson hails from Lancashire England and was born way back in 1944. I saw him live back during the 90125 tour. I always felt a kinship with him as he aligns himself with the elf culture and meditates with crystals and dream catchers. This first clip is a collaboration with Greek musician Vangelis. It’s a classic to me, one you never hear on the radio.

Jon has a website but it is rather disappointing. I didn’t find any music there, only links to buy music at amazon.com. A lot of the links didn’t work and the whole site seemed slow. The one cool thing is Jon’s artwork. It's worth a visit just to see his watercolors. You can find it here.

I went also to his myspace page. At least there was a few songs. Again, links that do not work. Come on Jon, get your act together.

His art work is there as well along with a dead link to "The Teachings of Don Juan" which is a favorite book of mine.

I saw the band Kinky at the Hollywood Bowl as part of a Latin music festival. Los Lobos was the headliner. Kinky really rocked the place. They kind of reminded me of Pink Floyd.

I saw the Young Dubliners play this past Sunday at the Valley Cultural Center’s Concerts in the Park. I’ve seen them a number of times and they always put on a great show. This song had the crowd to their feet.

“Pictures of the Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland of 1916 put to the Foggy Dew by the Young Dubliners. The rising was a rebellion by a combination of Irish patriots opposed to British rule. The song “My Girl” (also called “In The Pines”, “Black Girl”, and "Where did you sleep last night") has been around at least since the 1870’s. It has been covered and recorded over 600 times. The most famous version was recorded by Huddie William Ledbetter, better know as Lead Belly. I wanted to post a video version here but I am not able to. Lead Belly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1988.

Nirvana unplugged

This song gained a lot attention when it was covered by Nirvana on MTV unplugged leading some to believe it was written by Kurt Cobain.

Blunt’s record label blocked Weird Al from including the track on his latest album. The son of trumpeter Don Cherry (1936-1995), Eagle-eye was born in Sweden in 1971.

This 1998 hit “Save Tonight” comes from the platinum “Desireless” which was his debut album. I really like both the song and the music video.

There was a really cool track on Santana’s “Supernatural” called “Wishing it was” which featured Eagle-eye.

Eagle-eye released “live and kicking” earlier this year and has a new album coming out this fall.

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

I think I first heard "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol on an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”. It really caught my attention at the time. A lot of the music that I like (not all) is rather simple. Acoustic guitar (piano), mild percussion, easy vocals. This track fits along those lines. I really like to lay on the ground with my acoustic guitar and play this one. I like also the raindrops that come down in the video. I recommend to everyone, next time it rains, lay down on the ground and watch the drops fall from the sky. It is always amazing to me.

Plain White T’s

Hey There Delilah

The Plain White T’s, a pop band out of Villa Park, Illinois, released their fourth album in 2006 entitled “Every Second Counts”. The song “Hey There Delilah” is a re-release with the original found in the 2005 album “All That We Needed”. The re-release made it to #2 on the US Pop 100 charts. Its a good song. I am glad they did the re-release or I never would have heard it.

You can see live footage, photos, and even buy the album from the offical plain white T’s fan club site. I know its hard to believe, but these one hit wonders seem to have a following.

Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John

The feature video for today is “Young Folks” by Peter Bjorn and John which features Victoria Bergsman as guest vocalist. This musical trio hails from Sweden and “Writers Block” is their third release. I talked to a number of people about this song and I find a polarity. People either say that “its ok” or they absolutely hate it. For me, I think its ok. I listen to it and then, a few hours later, I find myself humming or whistling the solo. I think that is the main reason people hate it, the whistling solo. Someone put up an emergency blog to stop Peter Bjorn and John, and, while the blog has given up the cause as of March, I offer you this quote:

“They're like a Swedish Milli Vanilli. And worse: when he messes up and starts singing over the whistling, you can actually hear him laughing about it. You can almost hear what he's thinking: these stupid American hipsters will listen to anything. You can give them a song with a whistle solo (bad enough) but then you can fake the fucking solo and laugh about it…”

With that in mind, I found a bluegrass style version of “Young Folks” by dawn Landes and the WST Band. This version has no whistling. The solo is done on harmonica and fiddle. I have been a long-time fan of the bluegrass style. If you are a Peter Bjorn and John hater, this version will do nothing to change your mind, but if you are curios, here it is.

Neil Young "Old Man" from Massey Hall

I have been listening to Neil Young’s “Massey Hall 1971” CD for the last couple of weeks. This disc has a classic set of Neil Young jams. Some videos from this release can be found on Neil’s website including this version of "Old Man"

There are also a number of free video downloads from “Living With War” along with 1,970 other Living With War songs. I have only gone through about 10 of these so far.

The story and all the music from his “Greendale” release is worth a look. It took me a few times through to get a good handle on the story and its well worth it.

I am going to throw this one out here as the first one. I have always been a big fan of CSNY. I am a big fan of Neil Young and saw him many times in concert. Here is an acoustic jam of Crosby, Stills, and Nash (sans Young), just to get things started, and because, I said I would start today. Oh yes. We have begun.
