Mick Jagger - England Lost

I was going to start off with the original video of “Rain” by the Beatles. It showed up online yesterday. I never saw it before. It’s gone now. Taken down by the man after only one day.

So instead we will start off with this amazing version of “Wonderwall” by former Oasis member Noel Gallagher

James blunt has a new song (and album) and it’s pretty impressive. In the words of former presidential Libertarian party candidate Gary Johnson, “What is Aleppo?” Some impressive drone footage in this one. Somebody sing along.

The lyrics go something like this:

Somebody's gonna wave a flag
Somebody's going to attack
Someone will tell you to take a side
Tell you their version of wrong or right
Somebody's gonna let you in
Judged on the color of your skin
Slam a door in the face of your friend
Simply because you don't look like him

And then you gotta find a way that you're walkin'
Everybody's walkin'
You gotta find the words to say when you're talkin'
Everybody's talkin'

So I built the words into a song
I'm hopin' someone's singing along
And even if some notes are wrong
I'm hopin' someone's singing along

'Cause just one voice is not enough
I need to hear from everyone
And even when I'm dead and gone
I'm hopin' someone's singing along

Somebody's gonna build a wall
Then smash it with a cannon ball
Someone who somehow has got a gun
Will tell you who you can't and you can love
Some people keeping all the cash
They're gonna get away with that
Just 'cause some people don't think like me
Does that really make them the enemy?

And then you gotta find a way that you're walkin'
Everybody's walkin'
You gotta find the words to say when you're talkin'
Everybody's talkin'

So I built the words into a song
I'm hopin' someone's singing along
And even if some notes are wrong
I'm hopin' someone's singing along

'Cause just one voice is not enough
I need to hear from everyone
And even when I'm dead and gone
I'm hopin' someone's singing along

Make a noise
I can hear you now
Won't you raise your voice
Just a little louder
Make a noise
I can hear you now
Won't you raise your voice
Just a little louder

So I built the words into a song
I'm hopin' someone's singing along
And even if some notes are wrong
I'm hopin' someone's singing along

'Cause just one voice is not enough
I need to hear from everyone
And even when I'm dead and gone
I'm hopin' someone's singing along

Mick Jagger has a new solo album. It’s not getting much attention. England Lost

Youtuber Lars Kappler sums it up quite nicely -

Britain after the vote:
getting hit by a bike
honestly, it's fine
Britain after leaving:
getting hit by a car
well that hurt
Europe after brexit:
Where did you think you could go?
Britain:
I don't know what came over me

Until next time.

Solar Eclipse music

With the solar eclipse coming up on Monday, there is a lot of talk about solar eclipse music. Somehow people seem settled upon Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. She is even going to play it live on television during the eclipse. I never really liked that song.

My pick will see the sun blotted out from the sky

Pasadena public libraries will be distributing eclipse glasses from Sat the 19th to Monday the 21st at all locations. Get some, if not for yourself then for the kids.

On a separate note, I found a website called the Great 78 Project. They are putting all of the old 78 records online and making them available for free download. They have everything from Yiddish lessons to Hawaiian music but the real treasure is all of the old blues.

Here are two of my favorites:

Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter'

https://archive.org/details/Leadbelly-Where_Did_You_Sleep

Where Is My Good Man At?" by Memphis Minnie

https://archive.org/details/Memphis_Minnie_Where_Good_Man_At

You can listen online or download the MP3 files. No cost, no signup. It's amazing really.

Until next time,

Crystal Ship - The Doors

This one was Martin's suggestion to add to our playlist. It ended up being one of our better songs.

Beee   fooore   you

un   consciousness

Crystal Ship

Album : The Doors - 1967-

Track : 3

Before you slip into unconsciousness
I’d like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss
Another kiss
The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We’ll meet again
We’ll meet again

Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
You’d rather cry
I’d rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back
I’ll drop a line

I used this tab to play the song on guitar

I discovered Gorillaz

Ever since we went to Special K's Krazy Battle Ranch I've been
listening to Gorillaz. I am really liking a lot of their music.

Noodle plays Dare. This was the one that played at Battle Ranch and
caught my attention because it seemed so Krazy.

The whole thing didn't make any sense. It's coming up, it's coming
up, it's coming up, it's Dare.

What???

Thankfully I came across this:

Noodle explains Dare:

The other one that quickly caught my attention was Clint Eastwood.
Basically the Gorillaz drummer Russell was a tap tap tap tap 1,2,3,4
kind of drummer but suddenly Russell got possessed by a rap demon and
finally leans to kick it on the drums. The demon stays with them for
the next four albums to help them keep beat, bust rhymes, battle
darkness, ect ect....

Until next time

The girl from ipanema (original version from 1962)

Bossa Nova

Astrud Gilberto was just the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered a NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English.
Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape. - Grace Notes Music

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

I think I first heard this song on an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”. It really caught my attention at the time. A lot of the music that I like (not all) is rather simple. Acoustic guitar (piano), mild percussion, easy vocals. This track fits along those lines. I really like to lay on the ground with my acoustic guitar and play this one. I like also the rain drops that come down in the video. I recommend to everyone, next time it rains, lay down on the ground and watch the drops fall from the sky. It is alway amazing to me.

Neil Young

I have been listening to Neil Young’s “Massey Hall 1971” CD for the last couple of weeks. This disc has a classic set of Neil Young jams. Some videos from this release can be found on Neil’s website

There are also a number of free video downloads from “Living With War” Along with 1,970 other Living With War songs. I have only gone through about 10 of these so far.

The story and all the music from his “Greendale” release is worth a look. It took me a few times through to get a good handle on the story and its well worth it.

He also has a number of songs on his myspacepage.

Love Will Tear Us Apart Again

Here are three versions of the same song. The first one is the original by Joy Division, the second is a cover by Nouvelle Vague and the third is The Cure (with Lyrics).

I like the Nouvelle Vague version best but someone on YouTube had this to say:

"I really don't like it. The meaning of the song is not respected at all ; trying to turn a deep and heart-taking song into a futile and light pop song is obviously doing another - and much less talented- song. Moreover, her voice is quite commonplace, she got a coy way to play with her hand... This sounds ludicrous"

What do you think?
